Midjourney has been widely regarded as the best general-purpose image model for aesthetic, photo-real, and illustrative output since v4. The v7 release tightened that lead further — style consistency is excellent, prompt adherence has improved sharply from earlier versions, and the web app (no more Discord-only) finally feels like a real product.

Its core advantage isn't a single capability — it's the consistent aesthetic quality across many styles. Cinematic, watercolour, anime, product mock, magazine portrait: Midjourney rarely produces a bad image. That "never wrong" quality is why it dominates the working-pro market.

The trade-offs are well-known: no free tier, less granular prompt control than Stable Diffusion, and commercial-use terms that are stricter than open-weight alternatives. For pro creative work where output quality is the deciding factor, those trade-offs are usually worth it.
