AI Horde (Stable Horde)
Crowdsourced, volunteer-run cluster for free Stable Diffusion image and LLM text generation.
Pick AI Horde if you want a free, open, no-lock-in Stable Diffusion or LLM backend and you're happy to trade latency guarantees for zero cost.
Skip it if you need predictable latency, an SLA, enterprise compliance, or guaranteed access to a specific proprietary model.
AI Horde (originally Stable Horde) is a decentralized, volunteer-powered inference network that lets anyone generate Stable Diffusion images and run LLM text completions for free through a shared pool of community-donated GPUs. Users hit a web UI or REST API; workers around the world pick up jobs and return results. A 'Kudos' priority system rewards people who contribute compute, while anonymous users still get access at lower priority.
It's run by Haidra, a non-profit backed by donations and NGI0 Core funding, and the entire stack (server, workers, bridges to Automatic1111, ComfyUI, KoboldAI, etc.) is open source. The big differentiator is the absence of vendor lock-in or billing: there's no credit card, no per-token pricing, and no proprietary endpoint. That makes it a credible choice for hobbyists, researchers, and indie developers who want a real generative-AI backend without paying OpenAI/Stability/Replicate rates.
The trade-off is that quality of service depends on the swarm: model availability, queue depth, and worker reliability fluctuate, and SLA-grade latency is not on offer. Integrations include Krita, Blender, Discord bots, KoboldAI, SillyTavern, and dozens of community clients that treat the Horde as a drop-in inference backend.
One of the few genuinely altruistic projects in generative AI: a non-profit volunteer cluster that gives hobbyists and indie devs a real Stable Diffusion and LLM backend for nothing. Quality of service depends on the swarm, but as a free fallback or a way to prototype against an open API it's hard to beat.
