Canva
Drag-and-drop design platform with a built-in AI suite (Magic Studio) for copy, images, video, and presentations.
Pick Canva if you're a marketer, educator, or small team that needs to ship on-brand graphics, decks, and short videos fast with AI shortcuts baked in.
Skip it if you're a professional designer needing pixel-level control, or you want best-in-class generative image or video models.
Canva is a browser-based design tool that grew from a template-driven Figma-for-non-designers into a serious AI content factory. Its Magic Studio bundle wraps text generation (Magic Write), text-to-image, background removal/expansion, video clip generation, voiceovers, translation, and one-click brand-on-template resizing. In April 2025 it added Canva Code (a generative coding assistant) and a refreshed Visual Suite 2 with photo editing that can swap or restyle backgrounds. There's also a Canva GPT in OpenAI's GPT Store for in-ChatGPT design briefs.
It's aimed squarely at marketers, small businesses, social media managers, educators, and any team that needs polished decks and graphics without hiring a designer. The free tier is genuinely usable; Canva Pro (around $15/mo) unlocks the full Magic Studio quota, brand kits, and the premium asset library, with Teams and Enterprise tiers layering on approvals, SSO, and admin controls. Canva for Education is free for qualifying schools.
There's a Connect API for embedding Canva into workflows, plus a thriving Apps ecosystem (DALL-E, D-ID, HeyGen, Mojo, etc.). The caveats are familiar: AI generations are good, not category-leading versus dedicated tools like Midjourney or Runway, and exports can carry that distinctive 'Canva look' if you lean on stock templates.
Canva is the default answer for 'we need design output yesterday and nobody here is a designer.' The Magic Studio AI features won't replace Midjourney or Runway for purists, but bundled into one cheap subscription with templates and collaboration, they're hard to beat for everyday marketing work.
